The Fidget Cube: A Kickstarter Project Which Made Millions

Crowdsourcing is one of the most fascinating things to come out of the invention of the internet. With people able to contact others all over the world in a matter of seconds, more like-minded folk with niche interests are coming together than ever before. Antsy Labs’ Matthew and Mark McLachlan have recognized that power more than most with their Kickstarter project, the ‘Fidget Cube’, which soared past its $15,000 target, raking in an astonishing $6.1 million, accumulated by small donations from around 150,000 funders who got firmly behind the idea. So how did the McLachlans come up with a unique product like the Fidget Cube, a handheld which aims to eliminate fidgeting and boredom through a range of gears, switches and rollers?

Keen inventors, the McLachlans have been working on a few products for quite a while but, until the Fidget Cube, failed to attract much attention. The ‘Duet’, a charging block, was the focus of their attention previously, but it couldn’t gain the traction that it needed to.

The Fidget Cube, however, sparked their brains because they had a personal passion for it, and realised how effective and fun it would be. Thinking that if they found it useful, they would too, they set up Antsy Labs in 2015 to get the gears in motion.


The reality is that the Fidget Cube was under development three years prior to the registration date but they weren’t convinced enough that it was worth pursuing fully, and as a result, other projects took priority. But it eventually became apparent just how many people found fidgeting to be an issue, and with no specific toy out there to deal with it, they decided to focus more attention on it. The great appeal of the Fidget Cube, they believe, isn’t just that it’s fun for the person using it, but that others aren’t going to be bothered by it.

Despite the McLachlans spotting a gap in the market, they were far from convinced that the Fidget Cube was going to be successful, largely because there was no past evidence to suggest whether it would work or fail. Moreover, because the concept is so bizarre and unique, conveying it to others was difficult, because if you don’t have the fidgeting bug, you just aren’t going to “get it”.

All of those concerns proved to be unfounded, however, with the Fidget Cube ending up being far and away more successful than any of the other projects the brothers had launched on Kickstarter in the past. Once up and online, the Fidget Cube rapidly made it into the limelight, and quickly received the required funding – and then some!


Let’s briefly go over the other products that the McLachlans unsuccessfully tried to launch. After the Duet came the Trio, which could charge tablets as well as other devices. A novel idea, perhaps, but the crowdsourcing world can be cruel, and the Trio failed to reach its target and was subsequently scrapped. Keen on hearing the stories of other Kickstarters, the brothers attempted to develop a book, ‘Bright Ideas’, which looked at what it takes to be successful and why some don’t make it. In a nod to the difficulty of Kickstarter, Bright Ideas didn’t make it, nor did Storm the Gate, a table-top game that they also pinned their hopes on.

Anyone who has ever been rejected in life knows that it can be quite a painful thing. When you believe in something or a product, to find that others don’t share that passion can be frustrating and disappointing. However, the hallmark of a real inventor is the ability to come back and try again with something new and exciting that strikes it lucky.

Interestingly, the brothers commented that having a successful Kickstarter launch goes way beyond the product itself – you have to know how and when to market it. They learned the harsh lessons of this with the Trio, which would have sold well as a gift. But by launching it during the holiday season, they were asking investors to spend money on a product that wasn’t going to be ready for that holiday. Immediately, you’re set back and limited on the number of investors you could hope to attract.

The McLachlans hoped for $15,000 for the Fidget Cube, not enough to thoroughly fund its development, but enough to help relieve the pressure and give them the financial boost needed to get the product off paper and into reality. While prepared to put some of their money own, they didn’t need to after the Fidget Cube exceeded its goal by more than 4000%.


The Antsy Labs owners found that the Fidget Cube’s Kickstarter run was going to be totally different to any previous product they had attempted to get funded. Just four days after going online, the Fidget Cube had hit the $100,000 market, but that was only just the beginning. The key to this product’s phenomenal success was its social media presence, which was made possible by NowThis Futures, a Facebook page with a huge following in excess of two million. With that many people introduced to the product free of charge, there was always going to be one result. Many of those two million began sharing it to others, who in turn shared it to even more, and the viral boost soon brought the dollars racking in.

With 150,000 funders, it’s clear that the Fidget Cube was made possible on the back of many small investments rather than just a few big ones. Thousands of the tens of millions who saw the video on NowThis Futures put their hard-earned cash in, and now it’s up for the McLachlans to carry that passion and positivity forward and produce a product that’s going to sell to the masses.
The Fidget Cube is already under development and the Antsy Labs team plan on taking the product global as soon as possible. The holiday season was the brothers’ initial target, and they managed to meet it with the product going on sale just in time for people to get an extra toy for their Christmas stocking.


The early investors were the ones who had their faith repaid first, with the Fidget Cube going out in December, just before the 2016 Holidays. Those who didn’t chip in quickly enough won’t get their fidget cubes until March, but with the sheer number of products to develop, that’s still a quick turnaround and testament to the dedication that the McLachlans have.

The way they see it, why move too quickly and develop a product that isn’t going to do those who have believed in them justice? They think it better to wait and get things just right than rush and produce something inferior, especially when it’s not going to take long to get the Fidget Cube out there anyway.

The challenge now is to take the Fidget Cube from an idea to a device that the wider world can identify with and get behind. According to the brothers, retailers are already lining up to sell the Fidget Cube and a patent is pending. Everything looks to be in place for the McLachlans to make millions, and it’ll sure be interesting to track their progress and future work.

Fidget spinners are immensely popular because they are simple, no-frills fun. As well as fitting comfortably in between your fingers, never in danger of slipping out, they can spin for minutes with a simple flick, and can be alternated clockwise and anti-clockwise with minimal work.
